Liberta celebrated its fifth birthday at the end of November 2024, how time flies!

5 years of free and ethical services

What started as a simple public shared Nextcloud with Liberta Cloud grew very quickly, with COVID-19 serving as a catalyst in early 2020 with the teaching profession crisis.

Finding themselves in a pickle for the exercise of their profession (remember, the ENTs that no longer respond, the video conferences that crash, etc.?), Liberta had proceeded with the hasty launch of the Liberta Video platform based on the free software Peertube to accommodate the flow of destitute teachers and professors and it has never stopped growing since. Today, Liberta Video hosts more than 1 TB of videos and the remaining disk space is melting like snow in the sun... So donate, support!

Liberta's end-of-year gifts for you because why not

No communication for the 5 years or new online services because I have had very little time and energy for myself lately, no attachment to an official structure (I also have a lot of nice people to contact in return, my confused ones), in short everything remained in the boxes while I got back on my feet.

Nevertheless, a few gifts were distributed without anyone noticing a priori, and that's good.

Concerning the gifts for Liberta Cloud:

Following user requests, a new application was created: Memories! A new “Memories” tab now lets you organize, sort, and view your photos and videos in a much more enjoyable way, “like Google Photos”, with chronological sorting and a “memories” system, labeling, sorting by geolocation via location detection, etc., etc. A demo is available here to give you an idea: https://demo.memories.gallery/apps/memories/. The “classic” Photos app is still active, of course.

• Accounts that were out of quota have had their storage space increased so that they are no longer out of quota, it's a gift, it's nice!

• Accounts that were disabled for inactivity for over a year and that contained data have been extended

• Accounts that were about to be automatically deleted have been granted a much longer grace period (losing data is not part of my job as a sysadmin!)

• The memory allocated to Nextcloud has been increased to make browsing and the application more fluid

• All accounts have had their thumbnails regenerated to speed up loading times

• Nextcloud has been upgraded to Nextcloud Hub 8 (version 29)

Concerning the gifts for Liberta Video:

A Peertube runner is currently being deployed (this is important, read on) on a dedicated, powerful and autonomous physical machine

• The transcoding of all new videos will therefore be transferred to this runner, which will relieve the Liberta Video platform of all the most memory- and computing-intensive tasks and therefore greatly speed up the platform's responses, which whether in video import time or in execution speed for video playback

• This “runner” will also serve as “artificial intelligence” to make transcriptions and therefore automatically subtitle all your videos, or even translate them!

• This “runner” will also be made available to the wider community of other Peertube platforms to transcode their videos remotely

Liberta Mail, an encrypted e-mail service in preparation

What has been in the pipeline for a long time is starting to see the light of day: Liberta Mail (sounds of trumpets and cymbals in the background)!

Liberta Mail aims to provide an email service that will include:

• 5 GB “@liberta.email” mailboxes, initially
• native encryption of your email storage, only you will be able to consult your emails
• A strong antispam that learns by itself with block lists of known spammers
• management of “aliases”, these virtual mailboxes allowing you to hide your real address to:
  • protect you from spam
  • know if a particular site has leaked your information
  • keep your address confidential
• increased and secure deliverability of your emails:
  • all technical standards have been activated and tested (for the jargon: TLS, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, strong and recent encryption algorithms (Argon2ID), TLS certificates, etc.)
  • your email headers cleaned of sensitive information
  • a limitation of simultaneous sendings to certain finicky email services
  • mail-tester gave liberta.email a “10 out of 10” rating
